Costello Kennedy Landscape Architecture is the Landscape Architect of record for two Multi-pupose facility projects for the Navajo Reservation, one in Shiprock, NM and the other in Fort Defiance, AZ. Both projects include the development of a recreational facility to accommodate a gymnasium, classrooms, study areas, children’s daycare, and other amenities that provide opportunities for Tribal youth and the overall community. The landscape design consists of outdoor gathering spaces that are landscaped with the culturally significant plant material of the Navajo people. The intent is for the landscaping to become a demonstration garden that can be incorporated into educational programs to provide future generations the ability to learn about historical/cultural uses of the plants.
The Shiprock facility is a phased project; future phases will included ball fields and a play structure for more outdoor recreational opportunities.
