Costello Kennedy Landscape Architecture has recently completed a Native American based teaching garden at the Autry Museum of the American West in Los Angeles. The project is a permanent exhibit at the museum that presents the knowledge and practices of the First Californian cultures by linking the natural materials found in the garden to the cultural objects represented in the interior gallery spaces. The garden portrays many of the different California ecosystems and demonstrates sustainable landscape practices. Some other features include a casual walkway through the garden, “natural” water feature and wetland, culturally inspired paving patterns, a basalt column seating area and interpretive stations.
